They say that the journey is more important than the destination, but I would argue that packing for said journey is the most crucial part of it all. I have been a travel editor for nearly a decade, hopping between dozens of countries the entire time, so I would dare to call myself an expert on all things related to packing suitcases. I have tested backpack restrictions on budget airlines across Europe, experienced losing my luggage on multiple continents, and even tracked six checked bags (plus a few carry-ons) on my way to a wedding destination late last year. Through all the trials and tribulations, I came out stronger—now I’m here to share all my packing tricks so you can navigate any airport with ease.
Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or about to embark on your first big trip, I guarantee there’s a tip on this list that might just change your life, or at least the way you travel. Read on for the golden rules of packing.
This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s annual luggage week, where dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekend bags were road-tested by our editors. It has been updated with new information since its original publication date.
Start Packing Sooner Rather Than Later
Leaving everything until the night before might sound manageable, but you’re much more likely to forget important things when you’re working under a time crunch. Try to get your suitcase out of storage at least a day or two before you leave and start filling it slowly and deliberately—before any pre-travel stress sets in. I also like to create piles of clothes and accessories I know I want to take on my trip about a week before I fly out, so I don’t accidentally wear or lose anything beforehand (no one wants to do laundry right before a big flight).
